LGBTQ+

All Families are Beautiful.

LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning. The “plus” represents people who identify as other genders or have other sexual identities.

Here at Rushbrook Primary School we celebrate that our children come from different families. Like many other schools in the UK, we know some children have a mum and dad, some children have two mums or two dads, some children have one parent, some live with grandparents and some may live with other family members or carers. Despite the large variety of families we have, every family has one thing in common and that is LOVE!

In 2019, an estimated 1.4million people identified as LGB in the UK and that approximately 200,000 to 500,000 identify as Transgender. It is also thought as of 2019 that there are 212,000 children in same-sex parent families. Many children will know relatives, family friends or neighbours who identify as LGBTQ+. It is important to us at Rushbrook that we represent the different families we have within our community and within the country. Showing this representation to our children will help them grow into confident, respectful and successful citizens.

Aside from our moral responsibility, it is also our statutory duty to teach children about different families and relationships and therefore all primary schools in England are expected to teach Relationships Education. In teaching Relationships Education we ensure that the needs of all pupils are appropriately met, and that all pupils understand the importance of equality and respect. We ensure that all of our teaching is sensitive and age appropriate in approach and content. We work hard to build a diverse curriculum and will also build a diverse community representation into all subjects from art to maths to history to PE!

To prepare children for the diverse society they live in and to prevent bullying and discrimination, it is important that we talk about different cultures, religions and families. At Rushbrook, the children learn about and celebrate different family structures primarily through our PSHE scheme of work, science scheme of work and during our celebration of LGBT+ History Month. In addition, our school library and class book corners are stocked with books that represent different family structures and some of the texts we use within our English lessons feature an LGBT character. All children are encouraged to talk positively about their own and each other’s families and the school does not tolerate any homophobic, biphobic or transphobic language.

We are proud to be forward thinking and accepting of all families, to help our children mature into positive role models and global citizens.
